Infamus then and now

Infamus
By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RECENTLY named SKNVibes’ Top Entertainer of 2010, Infamus has certainly risen to the top in what appeared to be a short period of time.

According to the artiste, his ability to write music that touches people and have them relate to it to the point where it would be on constant repeat on their I-pods is a gift.

Infamus has been blessed with that ability and it has nothing to do with luck.

One cannot tell Infamus he is lucky, because he believes that his talent is truly a gift from God that was given to him to speak to people.

In a past interview, Infamus said, “I’m just giving thanks for life and for all the support I have been receiving so far. My feelings about the love and support that have been shown to me by these beautiful people I call my fans cannot be expressed in words. It is not a worldly feeling, but spiritually felt and also a mutual feeling in a way.

“People would express they are inspired by my music, when in fact I am inspired by the people and their true life journey. It is all about life and times, and I am thankful to the people for inspiring me to do what I do.”

His first recognised single in 2009, ‘21 Gun Salute’, had signalled his readiness for the international stage and also attracted many music lovers to him and his lyrics.

‘Feel Like Crying’ was released a few months after and was said to have solidified his status as one of the premiere artistes in the Federation who releases music that evokes emotions second to none.

It was hard to identify his sound, which seemed to be a fuse of the new sound of Reggae with Dancehall and R&B.

As his music gained popularity, Infamus received notable bookings that year including the first ever Clash of the High Schools, Jah Cure Concert, Miss Caribbean Talented Teen and was the headline act for Party Central.

Infamus also performed with Wyclef Jean when he came for a concert in January 2010. That gig was a milestone in his career as the Grammy Award superstar announced that Infamus needed to be on BET’s 106 & Park.

He held a birthday bash in February to commemorate his birth anniversary and also the release of a new music video called ‘Gonna Make It’.

The artiste received his first overseas gig in March when he journeyed to St. Thomas to perform at an event organised by Daren ‘Bogle’ Stevens. He then went on to be the first artiste to be signed on the 14th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival.

Not only was the event described as historic, but also significant as it was announced that Infamus’ management team had approached the Ministry of Tourism about financial assistance towards the development of his career.

Infamus had also received the opportunity to journey to Canada to record music for an upcoming album with the help of Canadian-based music executive Ivan Berry, who has been successful in developing popular artistes in that country.

“We don’t do this with local acts. As far as I have been Minister, we don’t have the budget for it. We don’t get involved in sponsoring local artistes, but we felt so strongly that Infamus has that potential that we have broken through our boundaries to be supportive, particularly with this major step to go abroad,” Minister Ricky Skerrit said at a press conference.

Returning from Canada, Infamus performed at the St. Kitts Music Festival and received great reviews from attendees.

After that performance, the artiste journeyed to New York where he performed at a number of  gigs, including a concert that featured Gyptian.

He also released new music after his Canadian trip, including ‘One of these Days’, ‘Tek Everything’ and ‘It’s My Life’.

In December he welcomed his first born son with long-time girlfriend Kendra Hutton. His son’s birth brought a blessing and joy which he said could not be matched.

“My Prince is here,” he declared on his facebook fan page.

With a new inspiration in the form of his son, Infamus is more focused than ever on succeeding. He admitted to making mistakes during his career, but indicated that he has learned from them and hopes to move on.

He had once again teamed up with Diego Spanner of Vivid Designs to produce his second annual birthday celebration.

Just before 2010 ended, he released what would be one of his most powerful songs which featured local rapper ‘World on My Shoulder’.

Questions such as does the artiste really feel like the world is on his shoulder now he is getting older, comes to mind from the song.

The song speaks about the artiste feeling like the walls are closing in and that he is going under.

“If you only knew where I’ve been, what I’ve been through, you don’t have a clue what I’ve done, done for you…” is one of the lines in the song.

He declared that he would continue making his music and nothing could change that. One of his goals for 2011 is to release Infamus’ ‘Times in Life’ LP.
