Press Release

North Sound, Antigua – Canada have thrown up the first upset of Caribbean Twenty20 when they disposed of English powerhouse and reigning Friends Provident t20 champions Hampshire Royals by 23 runs on Day Two at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds.

After fighting their way to a modest 129 for 7 from 20 overs the Canadian spin based attack muscled the Englishmen and kept them at bay as they could only reach 106 for 8 from their 20 overs.

Parth Desai the left arm spinner emerged with the Star-of-the-Match award for his 2 for 15 from four over while medium pacer Rizwan Cheema took 2 for 27.

Harvir Rizwan, the Indian raised seamer took one wicket for 21 runs as Johannes Myburgh and Benjamin Howell were the top scorers with 22 each. Canada took steady wickets to peg back Hampshire as they struggled to post any partnership of significance, the best being their opening stand of 29 between Myburgh, the South African pocket rocket and Jimmy Adams (12).

Cheema top scored for the Canadians with 31 from 21 balls, hitting a four and a pair of sixes.

The Sri Lanka bred Ruvindu Gunasekera made 29 from 26 balls while Simon Jones the former England pacer – of Ashes 2005 fame – took 2 for 20.

Despite the modest Canadian score the English boys fluffed the chase as their batting plan was thwarted by the disciplined Canadian bowlers who gave away no bowling extras. Total extras amounted to just 2 leg byes, illustrating the discipline with which they operated.
