BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FORMER World 100m Champion Kim Collins will be making additional contributions to athletics in St. Kitts and Nevis by organising a camp and promoting an athletics meet.

The 2003 World Champion sprinter is committed to sharing his knowledge and expertise through a Track and Field Camp scheduled for April, which will be held under the theme ‘Sharing to Achieve Greatness’.

The camp will feature Collins, world class coaches and athletes providing valuable knowledge to over 100 children and their individual coaches, so that they can aspire towards greatness in this field.

According to a release from Collins, every aspect of Track and Field would be covered in great detail, including sessions in proper warming up and cooling down exercises, dangers of drugs and alcohol in sports, the life of being a student athlete, tips on becoming a professional athlete, weight and strength training, proper nutrition of athletes, baton passing and making a school’s sports day more exciting, and a bigger revenue earner.
Collins told SKNVibes that he is hoping for better things to arrive as a result of the camp in terms of Track and Field in the Federation.

The initiative is open to children who are interested in sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, pole vault, among other disciplines, and they will be instructed in fun and creative ways while participating.

All of the facilitators will be renowned individuals who have graced the world’s athletics stage and have extensive experience in summer camps for children.

The goal of the camp is to identify athletes who possess the potential and strong love for the sport and assist them as they develop into champions, both on and off the track.

“We endeavour to see more children participating in their individual school’s athletic competitions and striving towards selection for national and overseas teams,” Collins said.

The camp promises to improve the overall level of performance of its attendees, promote participation in unpopular events such as the pole vault and heptathlon, generate greater excitement about the sport and encourage a more serious approach to training and competing while obtaining greater recognition of the athletes locally, regionally and internationally.

There will also be a Kim Collins Invitational meet on April 9 at the Silver Jubilee Stadium that will also feature overseas athletes.

The camp will also be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium and interested athletes can sign up through their schools or track clubs.

Evris Huggins, Public Relations Officer of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA), said it was a great initiative for the local athletes.

“I’m really excited about the meet and the camp, and that someone like Kim who has accomplished stuff people only dream of doing is hosting it,” he said.
