BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 12th 2011 (CUOPM) – A front portion of the historic National Museum on the Bay Road has been cordoned off.

A statement Tuesday from the National Museum advised the general public that structural defects have appeared on the upper section  of the historic building, also known as the old Treasury that have caused management to disallow pedestrian traffic through its archway and along the bay road side of the building.

“This measure has been taken to protect pedestrians from injury should there be any collapse of masonry on that side,” said the statement.

It added that engineers at the Public Works Department will be undertaking a thorough examination of the building to determine its safety to those within and outside of the structure.

It said that information will be provided to the public once the exercise is completed.

The management of the National Museum advised that the building can be accessed through the gate on the Port Zante side and that operations within the building continue at the National Museum, the Office of the national Trust and Only in St. Christopher.
