BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 19th 2011 – FORMER Calypso Monach Ayatollah, a.k.a. Bad Boy King, appeared before Justice Errol Thomas in the Basseterre High Court yesterday morning (Jan. 18) at the start of the new criminal assizes to answer charges of building breaking and larceny.
According to the facts read in court, Ayatollah, whose real name is Dion Stevens, is accused of committing the crime on June 23, 2010 at S&M Snackette in George Street, Newtown which belongs to Kimberly Gumbs.
It is alleged that Stevens broke into the snackette and stole a Tropical Delight juice, a gold pair of ladies ‘slappers’ and assorted food to the total value of EC$66.
Stevens, who is on bail, plead not guilty to the charges and was told that he would be informed when he should return to court.
Stevens has penned a number of popular tunes in the past, including ‘Kaiso Terrorist’ and ‘Bad Boy King’.
He was crowned Senior National Calypso Monarch of St. Kitts and Nevis in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He had also held the title of Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch in 2004.
