Who do you rate as the Best National Artiste and why?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OVER the past year the level of music in the Federation has skyrocketed and so has the number of national artistes, as they have grown from a mere 10 to 30 and it is now possible to find an artiste in almost every village.

Although the number of national artistes has increased, there has never been a showdown or any platform to declare the best one in the Federation. Therefore, SKNVibes went on the street and asked a number of individuals: “Who do you rate as the Best National Artiste and why?”

The first person asked was a young female named Shauna, who said it was Infamus because he has positive music.

From among a group of young men who were in Fort Street, one of them on condition of anonymity said his best artiste is Mono. He claimed that he does not normally listen to local music but he really likes Mono’s “although he does not get the exposure he deserves”.

Gavin Walters was of the view that C-Money is definitely the best national artiste because he sings about where he comes from.

“I would have to say Rolhensha, because I know her since she was young and she is really showing interest in the music business,” Sylvester said.

Alexthia, on the other hand, said her best national artiste is Nicha B, “because I really love his school time lover song and can relate to it”.

“A lot of people don’t rate Mention. I don’t know if it’s because of the fact that he sings with a band, but I think he is a really good artiste and possible the best in the Federation. His vocal skills are incredible but his attitude stinks,” said Chris.

Another young lady also chose Infamus, stating that he has meaningful lyrics. Wallis Wilkin too said Infamus adding, “He is the most popular artiste in the Federation. His music appeals to everyone…young, old and those in between.”

One young man named Sam had a mouthful to say on the topic. He said, “It ultimately boils down to Infamus and C-money, both similar yet different. I've always compared them to the same situation that exists between Movado and Vybz Kartel, obviously on a smaller scale. Infamus does more radio friendly, easy on the ears, feel good type tracks that ultimately has a lot to do with his command of computerised voice effects etc. Hence, that shows why his live performances aren’t comparable with his recordings; almost like day and night. C-money, on the other hand, is very lyrical; he has an effortless flow. He is a naturally good singer and doesn't venture too deeply into the computerised effects. Hence, that is why his deliveries at live performances are usually exceptional because it is natural.”

Archie, a pizza delivery boy, also chose Infamus and stated his reason for that choice is because his lyrics are really expressive and shows what he is all about.

Another young man named Shane was of the view that it is Nicha B because his lyrics go well together and he is very versatile. He said Nicha B actually performs and does less talking, so it is easy to get caught up in his music.

Maricia, who claims to be C-Money’s number one fan, said it is C-Money because he has a naturally good voice and could sing. “Not only that, he is very humble and down to earth,” she added.

Now that you have heard from these individuals, send us your comments and tell us which artiste you rate as number one in the Federation.
