‘Night of Entertainment’...A HUGE SUCCESS

MC ’Patches’ rendering his song
By: Carol Phillips, RCL Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, 1 March 2011 - The success of Rotary’s ‘Night of Entertainment’ can be judged, not from the overflowing crowd at Bobsy’s at Frigate Bay on Saturday night, nor from the continuous patronage of the Bar, nor from the selection of artistes, though all of these contributed, of course, but the success of the event must be judged from the overwhelmingly positive response of the audience.

From the outset, rollicking reggae rhythms from the 4 PLAY BAND had patrons singing along with them and tapping to their infectious beat, and even when the tempo changed to love songs, (Tears on my Pillow), the rolling reggae beat accompanying the band’s singer, made waiting for the Show a distinct pleasure.

The Show was emceed by Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd who kept interest up between the items by giving renditions from his recently released album.   For providing correct answers to questions, audience members were rewarded by DIGICEL, one of the sponsors of the ‘Night of Entertainment’. The other sponsors were Bobsy’s Bar & Grill and Xpress Events.

The all-local artistes held the audience’s attention throughout. The crowd was, in turn, highly amused by Calypso Reggie’s quips and jokes; fascinated and puzzled by the Magic show of Tunka Abdurama,  and awed by the candid and soulful poems of poets coming from Island Xpressions.  But enjoyment peaked with the presentation of Dr. Burnell Nisbett, who had the crowd in stitches as he regaled them with a plethora of jokes.

It was fascinating to watch the various body responses of patrons as Dr. Nisbett entertained them.  Some doubled over in laughter; others threw their heads back and guffawed; some were seen getting out of their seats and walking round in a circle; some slapped their legs as the punch-line reached them, some kept dabbing their eyes, unable to contain the amusement they were feeling, while others kept a perpetual grin on their faces even between the jokes.  If ‘Laughter is the best medicine’, then Dr. Nisbett (a vet) showed that he could administer to people just as effectively as he does to the animals.

It is the high standard of the performers and the crowd’s distinctly positive response to the Show  that point to the success of this ‘Night of Entertainment’.  Congrats to the Rotary Club of Liamuiga for showing us that it is not necessary to import artistes from abroad to ensure a show’s success.  It is clear that the talent we have here is second to none and it behooves us to celebrate what we have without thinking that ‘the grass is greener on the other side’.

ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO ADVANCEMENT OF CHILDREN FOUNDATION.

A member of the audience remarked that the Rotary Club of Liamuiga must be again applauded for its efforts to support worthy causes.  It has shown that in word as well as by deeds it is a valuable ‘service organisation’ working to uplift the nation in more ways than one.
