CPS athletes make strong statement

Patron--Oceanna Williams at trophies table
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 3rd 2011 - The Charlestown Primary School athletes make a strong statement yesterday on the track at the ET Willet Park when the school held its annual sports meet. The meet was held under the distinguished patronage of former outstanding athlete at the school, Ms Oceanna Williams.

The athletes gave it their all as they competed fiercely in an exceptionally close race between the three houses for dominance.  The children would have also been aware that only the top athletes would be chosen for the grand inter Primary meet or Nevis’ min I Olympics--and what an exhibition it was.

The crowd was out in its numbers as the parents and relatives of the students, joined with individuals affiliated with other schools across the island to effectively create a sea of colours at the Park.

From the little ones to the senior athletes, the crowd was highly entertained.

Little Iyize Martin took the crowd by storm when he burst the ribbon in first place but kept on running around the track as if he thought he had another four hundred meters to go, before he was eventually stopped..

The fun races which included lime and spoon and sack races, also served to create some real excitement.

The day’s event culminated with a fantastic display in the one hundred meters events, followed by the ever dynamic relays.

If what was seen yesterday is anything to go by, it’s going to be real action at the ETWillet Park come April 6th when the mini Olympics will be held.

The eventual overall scores are a testimony to the competitiveness of the meet:

    Green—champions—329 points
    Red—317
    Blue—314

The points tally for the most outstanding athletes for the day is expected to be confirmed later today.
