BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, AUGUST 15TH 2006 - Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry says his newly-elected Nevis Island Administration is offering its support to the Federal Government of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, to ensure that the people in particular and the twin-island Federation in general are better off in the next five years.
"The presence this evening of the Nevis Cabinet and the St. Kitts and Nevis Cabinet is an indication that we wish to work together," said Mr. Parry, who disclosed that earlier in the day he held a meeting with the Secretary General of CARICOM, His Excellency Dr. Edward Carrington, "and he said to me look, "the only reason why I support CSME is because there is nothing else that I can support"."
"The only way for the Caribbean is to work together and to move in the same direction. And I am saying to us, that we have to do this," said Premier Parry as he addressed a reception hosted by Prime Minister Douglas in honour of the contestants of the Miss Culturama Queen Show at the Four Seasons Resort.
He said his Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Administration "are asking for more powers in Nevis and we intend to run Nevis, but the people of Nevis and the people of St. Kitts, I do not feel should be divided."
"I think we all understand this position. We understand the need to make decisions for ourselves, but we also understand that in this small Caribbean where you have five million people, you really need to understand that we have to pull in the same direction. Let us do that, we have started already and let us continue to do that," said the Nevis Premier.
"I must say Prime Minister, you been here in Nevis, is a demonstration of your seriousness about St. Kitts and Nevis. We have spoken once or twice since the elections and you have reaffirmed what we have always discussed and I offer my support, my cooperation and the cooperation of the Nevis Island Administration Cabinet in making sure that this country and the people of this country be better off in the next five years and if you do not mind me using "Peace, Progress and Prosperity", said Premier Parry to the cheers of the invited guests.
Officials in attendance included Deputy Governor General of Nevis, His Honour Mr. Eustace John and Mrs. John; Cabinet Ministers of the Nevis Island Administration and the Federal Government; Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Mr. John Liu and Mrs. Liu, officials of the Culturama committee and residents of Nevis and St. Kitts.
