BRADES, Montserrat (March 10, 2011) – The winner for Census 2011 logo competition has been won by Linda Dias, an Assistant Architect Designate at the Ministry of Communications who said she was pleased that her design was selected.

Statistician Frankseco Yorke of the Census Department said they received 14 entries many of which were of quite creative. Each entry had to be accompanied by the rationalization for the design.

Dias chose to use the colours of orange, yellow and blue which was intended to demonstrate the “vivid” nature of our people. “The blue was used to reveal the luxury that we have been afforded as a people to be awarded such magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea.”

“It offers an enlarged “C” for the word ‘census’ curling into our vivid Caribbean sun.  This sun is a representation of the ‘warmth’ of the people of the island of Montserrat.  The sun’s rays morph into the abbreviation ‘MNI’ (the initials for the island of Montserrat), enforcing the local identity of the logo.  The “C” is also overlain on a blue house that is intended to represent the ‘housing’ in the ‘population & housing’ census.  The curved yellow form that entwines with the “C” also overlays on the blue house in an effort to embody the hilly terrain that most of our built environment is set on.

Entries were judged based on originality, memorability, appropriateness, simplicity, high craftsmanship, and typography.

Linda is to receive a $500 cash prize for winning the competition.

Census Day is May 12, 2011 on Montserrat.
