    Qualifies for CARIFTA Games

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – NEVISIAN athlete Adrian Williams convincingly earned his spot to compete in the upcoming CARIFTA Games slated for Jamaica over the Easter weekend (Apr. 23 – 25), when he easily surpassed the 53.44m standard to qualified for the Under-17 category.

Williams, a member of the Gladiators Track Club and the Gingerland Secondary School, also shattered the National Junior record for the Javelin with a mammoth first throw of 62.54m at the National Junior Championships/CARIFTA trials held at the Jubilee Stadium, Bird Rock, St. Kitts on Monday, March 14, 2011.

Williams’ outstanding performance at the trials also qualified him for the IAAF World Youth Championship scheduled for France from July 6-10, 2011. Although the qualifying standard for the IAAF is for a different weighed Javelin, Williams was still able to meet the 58.46m qualifying mark.

According to an article by Nevis’ sports-caster, Curtis Morton, “Adrian has an excellent chance to break the current Carifta Games Record of 59.38m set in 1993 by Kerry Edwards of Trinidad and repeat as the Under-17 Javelin Gold medallist.”

In 2010 Williams captured gold at the CARIFTA Games in Cayman Island with a distance of 57.86m.  He also won a silver medal at the Central American & Caribbean Junior Championships in Santo Domingo in July 2010 with a throw of 57.25m.

The Nevisian athlete’s throw eclipsed his former National Junior record of 57.86m, which had broken the 52.49m mark set by Elvis Williams in 1997 in Barbados. Williams currently holds the Under-17 Interschool Record of 56.48m set last year, while the Senior Boys record of 47.58m is held by Jerome Liddie of Verchilds High School.

Adrian Williams is also a member of the Nevis Youth cricket team and has represented his homeland at the regional level.
