Gingerland Athletes thrill crowd

Patron Kieron Powell and Headmistress Dawn Jeffers
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 16th 2011 - The athletes of the Gingerland Secondary School gave a superb display at the Gingerland Recreation grounds yesterday as the school held its annual sports meet.

The fact that towards the end of the meet, vehicles were parked from the grounds to half way up into Clay Ghaut from one end and going towards the Methodist church from the other end was a demonstration of the kind of crowd that was in attendance.

The meet was off to a slightly delayed start and immediately after a word of prayer by Headmistress Dawn Jeffers and a rendition of the national anthem by Music Teacher, Rohan Claxton, a minute’s silence was observed In honour of the late Vesalie Powell who previously taught at the school.

Then the athletes blazed the track.  From the very first race, there was the suggestion that the meet was going to be competitive –and so it was.  Some of the stars on the day, included the fleet footed Sadiki Tyson, the bustling Jesse Browne, the Carifta giant and IAAF qualifier in the javelin throw—Adrian Williams and Metritzer Lawrence.

The champion house was yet to be decided when the final relay races were being run.  The Teachers and athletes knew the importance of every single point and during the final races it was a common occurrence to see the athletes being accompanied around the track by parents, students and fellow athletes.

When the final announcement was made by Announcer Eric Evelyn, the tension on the faces was a demonstration of the uncertainty being felt in terms which house had won championship honours.  When the final announcement was made, it was the Green house supporters who went into frenzied celebrations.
    Final scores:

    Green House –winners -227 points
    Red house -223 points
    Blue house -212 points
