GSS tops Nevis zone in High schools’ championships

CSS celebrate big wicket of Lornel Dore
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 21 2011 - The Gingerland Secondary School cricketers completed a comprehensive victory versus their Charlestown Secondary School counterparts on Friday18th March at the Ramsbury grounds.  Having won the first game in the best of three series, CSS needed to win this game in order to force a third.

GSS  batted first and were off to a thumping start as former West Indies  under 15 selectee Lornel Dore in his come back match after a spate of injuries, proceeded to hit the CSS bowlers to all parts of the Park.  He went quickly to 40 before he perished to beauty of a delivery from off spinner Timothy Cumberbatch—one which not only turned but kept low and picked out his off stump.  Thereafter, the GSS team struggled but got to a competitive 130 all out in 26 overs.

The CSS team however would have been fancying their chances of overhauling the total but a superlative spell of bowling from Bervis Burke put an end to their hopes.  They were bowled out for just 85 with Ross Powell top scoring with 13.

Summarized scores: GSS 130 all out in 26 overs—Lornel Dore 40.  Hakeem Harvey 4 for 14; Steve Shurumba 4 for 12.

CSS 85 all out: Ross Powell 13; Timothy Cumberbatch 11; Chavil Archibald 10
Bervis Burke 5 for 16 and Corey Morton 2 for 12.

The two teams will now move on to the semi final stage in St.Kitts with GSS coming out as the top team from the preliminary encounters from the Nevis end.
