BASSETERRE, St Kitts (21 March 2011) - The Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) will on Friday, 25 March 2011 launch its Rotary Four Way Test Signs Installation Project for Primary and High Schools and the CFB College. This Launch and First Sign Installation Ceremony followed by the unveiling of the First Sign will take place at the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) at 8.30am.

The Minister of Education & Information, the Honourable Nigel Carty, will announce the official launch of the Project and will unveil the first sign which will be installed near the entrance of the WAHS.  The Members of the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team visiting from England, other officials of the Ministry of Education, Rotarians, Rotaractors, School Staff and Students will be on hand the share in the occasion.

Immediately following the unveiling of the Sign, signaling the end of the First Four Way Test Sign Installation Ceremony, persons will proceed to the computer lab to receive an Overview of the Computer-Assisted Literacy Solution (CALS) Programme, a Rotary International (RI) sanctioned programme, and an update on the operations of that Programme which is being conducted by the RCL in conjunction with teachers at the WAHS.

The Second Four Way Test Sign Installation Ceremony will be held at the Basseterre High School at 10.30am also on 25 March.  The unveiling of the sign will be executed by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, Information, Technology, Telecommunications & Posts, Mr. Curt Lewis.

After each Sign Installation Ceremony, Rotarians and the Members of the Visiting Rotary GSE Team will distribute book markers inscribed with the Rotary Four Way Test to students and teachers of each school.

What has now become part of the Guiding Principles of Rotary International (RI), the Rotary Four Way Test, originated from the action of Mr. Herbert J. Taylor who, in 1932, wrote down the four questions on a small piece of white paper to serve as an ‘ethical yardstick’ for his employees. Mr. Taylor’s company, Club Aluminum Products Company, adopted this ethical test, after discussions with his employees, as the official policy for conducting business at a time when his Company was experiencing financial difficulties. This official policy soon resulted in huge profits for the Company and large dividends for its shareholders.

As an active Rotarian beginning in the early 1920s, Mr. Taylor introduced his test to the Rotary Club of Chicago.  Some years later it was officially adopted by RI.

His creation, which has now become known as the Four Way Test and has been translated into more than one hundred (100) languages, is revered by Rotarians and is recited weekly at Rotary Club Meetings around the globe.
    The Rotary Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do

    Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The Computer-Assisted Literacy Solution (CALS) Programme incorporates two (2) separate educational programmes by AutoSkill International, Canada - the Academy of Reading and the Academy of Math.  For over 15 years, these research-based programmes have helped at-risk students succeed by building fluency in the foundation skills of reading and math. The use of CALS by Rotarians started in 2006 and offers an additional opportunity for Rotarians to help improve the lives of individuals within their Countries through literacy improvement.

The Four Way Test Signs Installation Project will continue in the weeks ahead with the installation of signs in all the schools as previously mentioned.
