BASSETERRE St. Kitts, March 29 2011, (Customs PRO) -  Eight Customs Officers have successfully completed formal training in Control and Restraint as part of a Self-Defence Training Course which concluded on Tuesday (March 29).

The officers were taught the appropriate techniques to be used to subdue armed would be assailants and aggressors without the need for weapons. On the final day, each participant was tested for practical application of the techniques taught in the course and all were successful in the eyes of a panel of examiners.

In a brief closing and awards ceremony, course instructor, Prison Officer Rae Browne praised the participants for their receptive and cooperative attitudes, which he said helped to bring out the best in the group. Browne outlined that the course was in its entirety fashioned from the Module of Control and Restraint (CNR) of Correction Facilities.

Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Rodney Harris was on hand to bring congratulatory remarks to the course participants and to distribute awards and certificates. Comptroller Harris admonished the participants that this training is for capacity building and integral in their roles of enforcing border security.

When asked what they have learned, course participants all agree that they have each gained confidence to discharge their duties. All were grateful to Instructor Rae Browne, who they praised as an excellent facilitator.

Assistant Comptroller for Training Mr. Theodore Brown has assured the Customs body that there will be another group of self-defence trainees later this year as the department seeks to have as many of its officers trained to protect themselves while discharging their duties.
