By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, April 1st 2011 - A fair sized gathering was on hand to witness an impressive welcoming ceremony, specially geared to the many visiting Triathletes who have embarked on Nevis in preparation for the grand Tri Star Nevis Triatholon event hosted by the St.Kitts Nevis Triatholon Federation.

The ceremony which commenced at about 3.50 pm was held in front of the Arthur Evelyn Tourism Authority office, located in down town Charlestown.

The visitors and locals alike were treated to high quality cultural presentations which included the St.James’ Primary school drummers (under the guidance of Fredie ‘Bhingi” Parris) the combined masquerades, The Rhythm Dance Theatre and the newly formed Nevis Cultural Development steel orchestra, featuring members of staff at the Nevis Cultural Development Foundation.

The visitors seemed transfixed by the performances and cheered loudly when each act was completed.

The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Alsted Pemberton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development. During his opening remarks he noted that once the initial approach about the hosting of the event had been communicated by chief local organizer Winston Crooke, Premier of Nevis, Hon Joseph Parry insisted that it must happen. From thereon, various individuals and Departments teamed up to play their part in making it a reality on the island.

St.Kitts and Nevis Triatholon Federation Chief Winston Crooke warmly welcomed the athletes and thanked the Nevis island Government for its significant contribution.

Tri star production representative Ben Hoekler, noted that the mega event has been held in eight countries so far and stated that St.Kitts-Nevis will be the first country outside of Europe to host it. He indicated that the emphasis was on the Triathletes having fun reaching new destinations. He stated that it was his first visit to the Caribbean and he would have experienced the much talked about sea, sun and sand but that the welcome he had received from the Nevisian public was really special.

Minister of Sports, Hensley Daniel referred to the event as ‘a signature event’ He noted that it was a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Sports, Culture and Tourism.  He challenged Winston Crooke and his Association to ensure that the event gets back to Nevis year after year, as based on the information received from the hotels, the island was reaping immediate benefits.

Premier Joseph Parry noted in his address that this event was a major boost to his Government’s emphasis on Sports Tourism combined with attraction of Drag Racing.  He too was high in praise for the efforts of Winston Crooke, Greg Phillip and their team for ensuring that the event was a reality and he wished the Triathletes every success.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Greg Phillip.
