The ‘Mini Olympics’ is here

Booths being set up at the ETW Park
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, April 6th 2011 - The much anticipated, much talked about day of the Gulf Insurance Primary Schools championships on Nevis, dubbed the ‘Mini Olympics’, is here.

Everything is virtually in place at the ETW Park, as vendors made final arrangements for their stalls yesterday and the meet officials made sure that all of the necessary communication lines and relevant markings were up to speed.

Arriving yesterday at the Charlestown pier was a nine member delegation from Gulf Insurance in Trinidad.  The delegation was headed by Mr. Leon Williams who had vowed on a previous visit that he will bring his family back with him and indeed this time around he had with him, his wife, son and daughter.

A delegation comprising of members of the NAAA and local Gulf Insurance representatives gave the T&T delegation a warm reception on the dock. The delegation included:  Lester Blackette-NAAA Chief; Halstead ‘Sooty’ Byron—NAAA PRO; Carla Liburd—NAAA Secretary; Wakeley Daniel and local Gulf Insurance representative, Mr. Arthur Evelyn. Also present was Ms Angelica Elliot, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry.

A contingent is also here from Sweden and they have been instrumental in bringing well needed equipment to be used by the NAA and the athletes.

Some nine teams will be doing battle today representing the following schools on the island: Current champs-Joycelyn Liburd Primary; Charlestown Primary; Maude Cross Prep; Ivor Walters Primary; Elizabeth Pemberton Primary; VOJN; St.Thomas’; St.James and the combined team of the Lyn Jeffers and Belle Vue Int schools.

The Deputy Governor General, on the advice of cabinet, has already set the tone by declaring the usual public half holiday, effective from 12 noon today. The meet itself is expected to start at 12 noon.

It’s anybody’s guess who will be celebrating at the end of the day.
