The Sandy Point High School art students whol will paint the mural
Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 29, 2004): Art students of the Sandy Point High School will use the upcoming Easter vacation to practice their talent while beautifying the school.

Youth officer in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport Pierre  Liburd told SKNIS that he was contacted by the faculty to assist the students who intend to paint a mural at the head of the third form wing. Liburd, who is also a renowned artist met with the students recently to discuss the concept which he said will depict the community spirit and the drive toward excellence which is emphasised at the institution.

“This (project) is something very positive for them to engage in at a time when they could get involved in other not so healthy activities,” the young artist disclosed. “I believe this is one of the things that people should encourage and support.”

The former student outlined his desire to give back to the community and explained that this project speaks directly to his responsibilities as an active community member and a youth officer. “It really is a good opportunity to help young people develop their skills and recognise their potential,” he said.
The mural will feature a number of scenes including religion, academic success and sports. Liburd disclosed that this will also help to revitalise respect for young people as well as the interest in the arts. “People don’t really appreciate young people’s talent and the arts is not as popular as it was a decade ago and I plan to change that,” he said.

The youth officer noted that he would like to see similar projects carried out throughout the island.

Minister with responsibility for the abovementioned ministry and Parliamentary Representative for the area Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin credited the initiative of the young students and their teacher Daren Moses for developing the project. She indicated that the mural will serve as a constant reminder to the students to persevere and work hard to achieve their dreams.
