International Conference Discusses the Caribbean Grid

GURABO Puerto Rico, April 6th 2011 – The environmental and economic viability of connecting several Caribbean power systems is the subject of the conference Electrical Interconnection of the Caribbean. The Conference will take place on May 5th-7th at Turabo University in Gurabo, with guests from all over the Basin as well as speakers from other continents who will share their interconnection success stories.   
 

The International Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Studies (CIEMADeS, Centro Internacional para Estudios de Medioambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible) is in charge of the conference, with support from the Puerto Rico Energy Center (PREC) and the State Department of Puerto Rico. Guests include the World Bank, the Red de Operadores de Sistemas de Transmisión Europea (ENTSO-E) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, among others, said CIMEADeS’ executive director, Ada Torres Ramirez.

 
“For the Caribbean islands, interconnection can be a key to future development based on renewable energy. The Conference will promote in-depth knowledge of the archipelago’s potential for energy source diversification and will foster partnerships between governments, research institutions and the energy industry. We will learn about viable interconnected electrical grids in other regions that could serve as examples for the Caribbean”, she added.  
 

The conference has three tracks: technology, environment and research and development, to cater to the interests of all audiences who work with this topic, from entrepreneurs and investors, to academics and environmental researchers.
 

Participants will hear presentations from researchers, government officials and representatives of the energy industry from United Kingdom, France, Panama, Dominican Republic, Nevis, US Virgin Islands, St. Lucía, among others. Regional networks from Europe, Asia and Africa will present their case studies. Speakers include Phillippe Benoit, from World Bank; Congresswoman Donna Christensen, US Virgin Islands’ delegate to the House of Representatives; and Mark Lambrides, from the Organization for American States (OAS).
