Students excel in Taekwondo Competition

    SALEM, Montserrat (April 4, 2011) – A goodly crowd came out to witness students of the Chung  Do Kwan Taekwondo School compete for trophies and medals last Saturday at the old Salem Primary School.

     


    The competition was organised to give the students an opportunity to showcase their abilities and techniques and to raise funds for the school, run by fourth-degree black belt instructor Leonard Lynch.

     


    Students vied for awards in their level in both taekwondo forms and sparring and were judged by a three-person panel in forms along with lawyer David Brandt, an avid martial artist.

     


    The winners in the Best of Forms segment are as follows:

     


    White Belt           1st Place                Nia Golden                          23/30
                               2nd Place               Kasim Estwick                    21/30

     

    Yellow Belt          1st Place                Noah Cole

     

    Green Belt          1st Place                Tavari Cabey                     24/30
                              2nd Place               Joshua Golden                  23/30

     

    Purple Belt          1st Place                Kijuan Kirnon                      18/30
                              2nd Place               Sariann Greenway               12/30

     

    Brown Belt          1st Place                Aaron Lewis                         27/30
                               2nd Place               Kirk Brade                          22/30

     


    The winners in the sparring competition were: Kirk Brade, Kasim Estwick, Dashaun Bassaragh, Kijaun Kirnon, Sariann Greenaway, Shiloh Sweeney, Alfred Cole, Nia Golden, and Lirinette Cassell.

     


    Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sports, Hon. Jermaine Wade, who is also a black belt in Taekwondo, said he was very pleased with the turnout and the support given by parents, members of the community and the businesses that sponsored the day.
