ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, April 11th 2011 - According to sources, Mr. Tyson and a friend were looking for whelks when he apparently slipped and fell into the water.

Mr. Tyson could not swim and asked his friend to get help. However, VINO understands that due to the rocky terrain, rescuers were not able to save him in time.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am.

The Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) received an SOS call at 10:10 a.m., Phil Aspinall, VISAR’s head, told VINO in an invited comment.

Mr. Tyson’s body was transported to the morgue on Tortola.

A press release issued by the Virgin Gorda Festival Committee on March 22, 2011 had stated that its village will be named George Tyson Festiville.

Mr. Tyson was a Heavy Equipment Operator with the Public Works Department since 1965 and was originally from the island of St Kitts.

He was also a booth owner for the past 25 years and was always a strong supporter of the Virgin Gorda festival.

Attempts to contact members of the committee for a comment on this tragedy were unsuccessful.
