BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 21st 2011 (SKNIS) - Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis has launched a series of fundraising activities to ensure the twin-island Federation is represented at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens 2011.
National Director of the local Special Olympics movement, Clarice Cotton told SKNIS that the June 25 to July 04 global sporting event provides an opportunity for special athletes to showcase their skill on the world stage which in turn would enhance their self confidence and promote the twin-island Federation internationally.
As such, board members, parents and volunteers are working with private and public partners to raise funds to support the tremendous cost of traveling to Greece. A Tag Day sale and charity football match has already been held. The latest initiative is the retailing of Easter Buns from Jamaica.
A fresh supply from Captain’s Bakery was flown to St. Kitts via FedEx. The courier’s Country Manager, Jason J. Browne presented the baked goods to the Chairman of Special Olympics, Lloyd Lazar on Wednesday (April 20). Mr. Browne noted that FedEx was pleased to fulfill this annual contribution, which spans some 10 years. He added that the value of this year’s sponsorship totaled $17,000.00.
Mr. Lazar thanked FedEx for its continued partnership and encouraged locals to purchase the delicacies from members of the Special Olympics Board, the Cotton-Thomas Comprehensive School, J’s Shop and Save at Newtown, and Steppin on Fort Street.
Upcoming fundraising activities include a drill display by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force as well as a gospel concert and torch run.

Approximately 7,500 Special Olympics Athletes from 185 nations are expected to compete in 22 Olympic-type sports during the games.
