Locals Seek Certification from the Banquet Server Workshop

By: Saju Ng'alla, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 26th 2011 - A Banquet Server Workshop for workers in the hospitality and tourism sector ended last Thursday after four days of training at Ocean Terrace Inn.

The workshop, which started last Monday, was funded by the Organization of American States, and aided by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

More than 15 workers from hotels and restaurants from St. Kitts and Nevis participated in the workshop, which was facilitated by Andrew Forson, director of the Securities and Commerce Institute that is based in Miami.

OAS Representative Starret Greene said the Banquet Server Workshop was one of several that have been held over the past three years under the project the OAS Capacity Building: Tourism Training and Certification Project, which has enabled persons to be trained in Food and Beverages, Train-the-trainer programmes, Front Desk Operations and Business Operations.

Greene said the Banquet Server Workshop will provide the participants with quality training to upgrade their qualifications.

“You will be certified, and you will be qualified to train others,” Greene said. “We are bringing you the very best and no one will be able to doubt your qualification.”

The workshop facilitator, Andrew Forson, said he personally believes that St.Kitts/Nevis has the best tourist potential in the Caribbean.

“We train the best to work in the in the best places, and St. Kitts should have the best,” Forson said. “Tourism is the driving force of your economy, and so it only makes sense we prepare you to deal with people from all walks of life at the standard they are use to.”

Forson said that at the end of the workshop on Thursday, participants were required to pass an exam in order to attain the international certification.

“They will have a certification that is recognizable anywhere in the world,” Forson said.

Novelette Morton, Human Resource Manager at the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, said that the training was indeed a worthwhile training initiative.

“As we are all aware, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has decided to vigorously pursue tourism as an area for national social-economic development,” Morton said. “It is therefore important to equip our people with the skills necessary to perform efficiently in the hospitality and tourism sector.”
