Press Release

ST.GEORGE Grenada, April 26th 2011 - A Cabinet committee has been appointed to look into “certain challenges” faced by the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA).

The decision came after it was brought to government’s attention that the GCNA was unable to meet its ongoing obligations in recent weeks, including its obligations to farmers.

“Given the strategic nature of this commodity in the country’s economy, its employment potential and the number of families touched by it, we feel compelled to look into the situation to determine whether and to what extent any form of government intervention is necessary, desirable or appropriate,” Prime Minister Tillman Thomas said Tuesday.

The Cabinet Committee, which has been mandated to look into the matter and report to Cabinet “as quickly as possible”, is led by Minister for Agriculture, Michael Denis Lett and includes Finance Minister Nazim Burke and Attorney General Rohan Phillip.

Prime Minister Thomas says the Cabinet will give urgent attention on the best approach to addressing the situation, once the report is received by Cabinet.
