Opposition pleased with opening of ICT Centre

Dr Keith Mitchell and Dr Manmohan Singh
Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, April 27th 2011 - The Opposition New National Party (NNP) is pleased with the opening of the new Information Communication Technology Centre (ICT) by the Government of Grenada. This facility will indeed provide much needed training for many Grenadian youth and increase the capacity of these youth in the field of ICT as they prepare for the job market or improve themselves in their areas of work or study.

Former Prime Minister of Grenada and Minister in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet with responsibility for ICT, Dr. the Right Honorable Keith Mitchell in a paper on Science and Technology in the context of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy delivered to the 18th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in July 1997 stated:

“…we need to, as quickly as possible, develop a computer literate society. Further, the universities and technical colleges must develop for the region a cadre of persons who can develop software. “

It must be remembered as well that it was Former Prime Minister Mitchell who negotiated Grenada’s ICT Centre with the Prime Minister of India Mr. Manmohan Singh, during discussions at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, Uganda in 2007. These initial discussions saw the ground work being laid for the project with the Indian government sending to Grenada an ICT Advisor under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program, who has worked along with the Government of Grenada from 2005.

The Opposition therefore calls on the Government to effectively use the facilities provided for the benefit of all Grenadians in continuance of the New National Party’s vision for ICT Development for Grenada.

Her Majesty’s Opposition also calls on the NDC Administration to recognize the Office of the Opposition Leader as an important partner in the overall development of Grenada and as such the importance of their presence at various national functions and activities. It must be noted that while the ICT Centre of Excellence was born out of the vision and work of the Former Prime Minister, the Government on its launch did not see it fit to invite the Opposition Leader to the opening ceremony which is a glaring lack of protocol on their behalf. The Opposition calls on the Government to address this situation in the future and immediately arrest this developing trend.
