Education for Advancement (St Kitts and Nevis) Winners for the 1st Graphics Design and Photography Competitions

EFA Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts May 12th 2011 - Education for Advancement (EFA) is pleased to announce that the winners of the first EFA (St Kitts and Nevis) Graphics Design and Photography Competitions are Shashi Wigley and Daryl Charles respectively.  The names of the winners were announced at FND on Monday, 9th May 2011.  Participants of the competition along with various media houses were present when the announcements were made by EFA’s local representative Ms Leah Sahely.   Also present was Mr John Evans, President of EFA.

Shashi Wigley won the graphics design competition.  According to Shashi,
“The illustration for the winning design represents Sir Robert L. Bradshaw, the father of our nation. The flag merging from his face, depicts the result of his contribution to the Federation.  Mr. Bradshaw fought for the working class. He Aspired them to be free from the plantocracy and motivated them to own their lands.  And so, because of his leadership role in the free movement, we as one of the smallest islands under the British system have now Achieved Independence”.

Daryl Charles won the photography competition.  He indicated that the winning photo indicated that “The young child, is my cousin, and was taken at the dinner table of his house. He's basically depicting the desire to become a respected businessman. In the photo, he is on the phone jotting notes from a client”.

EFA’s local representative, Ms Leah Sahely, indicated that she was very pleased and proud of the quality of entries received.  “Participants were both from St Kitts and Nevis and I was very impressed with the quality of entries received.  We have talent in the Federation and I do encourage all participants to consider applying for the programmes in photography and graphics designs offered via distance learning by UK’s Interactive Design Institute (IDI).  Taking these programmes will prepare these gifted individuals to compete in a career field where formal qualifications are often as important as raw talent”.

Eight (8) graphics designs and ten (10) photographs were submitted.  Both local and international judges (from IDI) selected Shashi and Daryl’s designs as the winners in their categories.  Both winners choose the $500US cash prize.  Winners had the option to choose $500US in cash or $1000US discount towards programmes at the Interactive Design Institute. In addition to these prizes, Mr John Evans offered all participants of the competition a $250US scholarship if they decide to enroll in any of the IDI programmes in the future.

All submissions can be found on the EFA St Kitts and Nevis’s facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Education-for-Advancement-St-Kitts-and-Nevis/137771684387
