By: SKNTTA Technical and Development Committee, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 12th 2011 - Titan Lee, an ICT Technician with the Taiwanese Mission deposed local Table Tennis coach Calvin Lake in the Finals of the 2nd SKNTTA Grand Prix event held at St Peters Community Centre on Friday 6th May 2011.

Lee beat Calvin 3-1 (scoring 11-5, 11-7, 2-11, 11-5) where his balanced style of play and timely attack on the return balls were the major factor in his success. In the third game Calvin’s show of strength earned him the set winning it 11-2, with some effective third ball attacks.

The semi-finals provided a sneak preview of what was to come, Lee played Angelisa Freeman winning the match 2-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-5) whereas another local coach Miclos Swift, lost to Calvin 2-nil (6-11, 6-11) in the other matchup. In both games the semi-finalists displayed signs of confidence and mental strength in their attack, penetrating the defensive walls of their opponents pushing the ball around until the time arose to attack.

For the three table tennis events held within the past month, the standard of play has improved with some attractive display of table tennis skill by the participants.

In the group stage, 12 athletes participated in two round robin groups. A key matchup during the group stage was the battle of the siblings, Andre Freeman coming up against his sister Angelisa Freeman, two trainees in the national table tennis camp.

Andre lost the match 2-1 to Angelisa (11-8, 8-11, 7-11), while securing the first game which was contested on each point, Angelisa showed the mental fortitude through an effective style of play with push and defensive return which lengthen the rallies and forced Andre into making errors.

The SKNTTA will be hosting two more Grand Prix events for the Month of May:

3rd Grand Prix event is scheduled to be held on Friday 13th May 2011 from 6.00pm at the Challengers Community Centre
4th Grand Prix event is scheduled to be held on Friday 20th May 2011 from 5.30pm at the Conaree Community Centre
