Premier Parry advise Mothers in New York to spend time with their children

Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry with Calypso singer King Meeko, Tony Sadio and Dr. Eustace Huggins
Press Release

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, May 10th 2011 - “Mothers must find a way to drive their children away from a life of crime.” Nevis Premier, the Hon. Joseph Parry made that statement on Sunday at the annual Kittitian and Nevisian Association (KANA) Mothers Day Gala on Sunday when he delivered the keynote address. The social event was held at Maestros in Bronx, New York under his distinguished patronage.

“The challenge is difficult and it is one that requires much involvement from mothers who sometimes are single and have very little financial assistance.  However, I must say the women of St. Kitts and Nevis are strong with a special wisdom and nurturing that our young people need,” Premier Parry told the nearly 300 guests in attendance at the auspicious occasion.

Discussing the increasing crime among young people in Nevis and around the region, Premier Parry said that something in our young people was responsible for the recent spike in bad behavior and it could well be due to the lack of interaction between mother and child since the mother had to work many hours to maintain the home.

“Young people today are not being supervised as they have been in the past, gangs have become the family of many of these young people,” said Mr. Parry.

He applauded the role of women and described it as a tremendous job; a position which he noted carried much weight and was a key factor in shaping the character of young lives.

According to the Premier, the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Government had recognized the need to work with the youth on Nevis through training and mentoring sessions.

The Premier also pointed to the strengths and struggles of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“The people of St. Kitts-Nevis have a rich history that dates back to Africa and though we have struggled and met numerous hardships, we have persevered and it is important that the young people know of which they came from,” he said.

Meanwhile, a presentation of a plaque was presented to the Premier from former Brooklyn Councilwoman, Mrs. Una Clarke on behalf of KANA.

The Premier later presented plaques to the 2011 Mothers of the Year, Mrs. Hillary Austin, Ms. Annette Francis, Ms. Lorraine Tyson, Ms. Veronica Georges and Ms. Glenniver Sargeant.
