ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, May 25th 2011 - Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has encouraged students participating in the National UNESCO Science, Technology and Mathematics Fair to focus their attention on applying their knowledge to discovering and developing new products from Grenada’s indigenous resources.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of the fair, which is into its second day at the National Stadium.

“We are in a technological revolution which has quickly transformed and is transforming the way we live. Students, in our classrooms today, are tomorrow’s mathematicians, scientists and experts. You hold the keys to Grenada’s development”, the Grenadian leader said as he encouraged the students to “work together to harness these new frontiers.”

He said the level of information available to students removes the barriers of water, geographical location and employment possibilities, adding that technology “levels the playing field” by creating opportunities for global employment.

Following a tour of the fair, the Prime Minister challenged the students to use the available knowledge and technologies to better inform the use of energy, improve the utilization of agricultural and other natural resources and enhance Grenada’s economy.

He commended the teachers for assisting students in their preparation for the fair, which the Prime Minister said provides “an ideal occasion for you to display the results of your experiments and your research as you seek to develop new lines of products or expand on existing capabilities.”

He urged the students to focus on their education, with special emphasis on the Science, Mathematics and Technology subjects, in order to find new uses for the raw material found in Grenada.

“Your expertise will gather further importance as the price for agricultural commodities on the global market continues to increase.  Small countries, like ours, with open economies and limited land space must find innovative solutions to the difficult realities that face us daily,” the Prime Minister said.

In his address the Prime Minister highlighted a project from the St. Andrew Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) which produced ethanol from Cocoa and another from the Holy Cross RC school which involved the production of Farine.

“It is these kinds of research that drives today’s successful companies and today’s economies. This must be encouraged,” he told the students.
