Green Valley Global's May Fair a success

By: T. Coreentje Phipps, Press Release

CAYON, St. Kitts - Saturday May 21, 2011, kids and adults took a bite out of the Big Apple during Green Valley Global's first ever May Fair in aid of the Senior Citizens Gala to be held at the Cayon Moravian Church on Sunday, June 12, in Green Valley, St. Kitts.

On a typical New York Spring day with balmy weather, coupled with good old West Indian fun, the Harlem Courtyard located near picturesque Morningside Park, between 114th and 115th Streets, came alive in true May Fair splendor.

An array of stalls lined the courtyard with items ranging from decorative and eye catching jewelry to mildly worn shoes and clothing, sweet treats, services, and craft and games for the kids. Not to be outdone, the food and drinks stalls were also a crowd pleaser with delightful treats including barbecued chicken, Johnny cake, pellau, pot fish, banana fritters, souse, goat water and black pudding. Sorrel, ginger beer home made lemonade, and cool tasting punch, were the staple thirst quenchers for the non-alcoholic drinkers and kids.

Jose and Bernardo Phipps, along with Trevor Bridgewater, a friend and partner of Green Valley Global, were the skilled music makers who kept the audience abuzz and the vibe just right.  Together, they rhythmically rocked and entertained dozens who reveled in the moment swaying from side to side and bouncing up and down.

Of notable mention was Jose's three-girl band who provided live and truly lively musical entertainment.

The May Pole enthusiasts danced around the Pole demonstrating how 8 individuals each with one ribbon could dance in synchrony around a pole, dancing their worries away while creating a "ribbon like" spectacle for onlookers.

And so it was on Saturday as the participants weaved around the May Pole first in a clockwise direction, dancing to sweet Calypso music and untied the ribbons in an anti-clockwise direction, all while jumpy tunes spun from the dj's table.

The kids played hole in the wall, hoola hoop, fish and more while a few indulged in the craft table and face painting.

The highlight of the afternoon was the drawing of the Grand Raffle. The third prize of a spanking brand new digital camera was won by Recaldo, the second prize of an Apple Ipod was won by Jules Isaac and the biggest of all the prizes, a $300 "on the spot" cash prize was won by Trevor Bridgewater; a truly fitting way to bring the curtains down on the May Fair festivities.

The members and supporters of Green Valley Global extend sincere appreciation to each and every individual who helped make their first May Fair an astounding success. The final product involved the efforts of a number of individuals, without whose support Saturday's event would not be possible.

Green Valley Global, in collaboration with the Green Valley Festival Committee will host a Senior Citizens Gala on June 12 at the Bethesda Moravian Church Hall, in Cayon St. Kitts.

As we celebrate 15 years of our community festival, we also take time out to remember our treasures; the men and women who helped to shape our communities; the men and women who planted the seeds for our communities to blossom today.  In looking back, we also look forward with hope and confidence that their work will never be forgotten, and that we will emulate the lives they lived to help rebuild our troubled communities.

Thanks again to one and all!
