Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, June 1st 2011 - There is an old adage which says that “a friend in need is a friend indeed”. This simply profound metaphor begs the understanding that one knows who one’s true friends are, when things don’t seem to be taking place in one’s favour and yet, one is not deprived of the affection and solicitude of one’s associates.

Friends of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, ValLimar Jansen & Tom Kendzia (together with their respective spouses) readily accepted the invitation of the Basseterre parish fundraising committee to journey to St. Kitts once again and help with the church’s efforts to raise money for some urgently required renovations.

Just as they did in 2008, these dynamic, multi-talented performers will make their presence heard and felt in a pulse raising, spirit lifting, fundraising Gospel concert. However, this year, it’s a family affair - with Frank Jansen & Mary Carol Kendzia providing musical and other forms of accompaniment to the concert’s main performers.

Speaking of family, the family of the faithful is not delimited by denominationalism and, as a testament to the universality of our faith, local mega-talented singers Masud Sadiki, Larry Vaughan, and Nigel Browne as well as steel pan impresario Melvin Hewlette, are all performing at this concert and assisting the church in this endeavour.

As is generally known, the Catholic Church in Basseterre has been at the service of the people of St. Kitts-Nevis (regardless of creed) for well over 150 years. She has fed many of our hungry, poor, neglected citizens; clothed our naked, uplifted our destitute and cared for our infirm. Now, the church is in need of your help. The physical building serves as the home of the church (the people of God) and while it is structurally sound, there are parts of it that are, at best, outdated. The roof of the church lets in torrents of water whenever rain falls and the electrical system has caused at least one black-out and two minor fires in recent months.

The church’s need for repairs is real and pressing. And hard though it may be for some to believe, the need of your financial support is imperative. When life challenges whatever preconceptions one may hold about anything, and presents seemingly adversarial experiences for us to address, it is a blessed thing to be buttressed by those who know you most and best, for it is then that you are almost certainly guaranteed success.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, give us your support and give yourself the gift of an evening of heavenly, inspirational music and celestial singing.

As Tom puts it, “[it] is such a thrill for us to be able to be together in such a lovely place, but most especially to be with the beautiful people of St. Kitts. [I am looking forward to singing with all who come to the concert]. I know that once again we will help to raise money for the ongoing work at the cathedral, so I hope we are successful in this endeavour [and] we can raise as much money as possible.”

The concert is being held under the Distinguished Patronage of His Excellency, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, Governor General of St. Kitts-Nevis, on June 4th, 2011 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs (Eastern Caribbean Central Bank) Auditorium. It begins at 7:00 pm sharp.
