It really takes a while to decide to ride bicycles on the public roads in our Federation. Why? Because it is frightening that motorists feel that the roads are theirs and theirs alone. Is it selfishness? Or is it willful to try and frighten the bicycle user? In such a small country there is no need to treat others with disdain, but it happens! That is a fact!

There are quite a number of persons who would really like to enjoy an early morning ride, or even an afternoon sortie with friends and relatives, just for the sake of having clean fun. Others would like to do so to try and shave off a few pounds. And why not? But the fear of being insulted by the rude and insistent blaring of a horn, or worse yet, being knocked off by some angry or careless driver makes one opt for safety by not bicycling at all.

At this time when the world is speedily entering into a severe recession, is it not logical that we try to economise? Why do we need to drive a car 500 feet when we can easily use a bicycle or walk? Why are there persons who insist on speeding when we can easily and comfortably get to our destination with lots of time to spare and save on gasoline? I dare say that no place is ‘far’ in St. Kitts and Nevis. So why do we have to show off how big or expensive our car is by just driving it around the corner? For those in proximity to work and school it might be better to bicycle, and in the process get some well needed exercise and fresh air, as well as cut down on pollution. This would also ward off unnecessary diseases.

So, give the bicycle user a chance to savour the joys of bicycling. Slow down and be courteous. Be considerate. Be helpful. Join him or her when you can. Be a part of the clean fun and countless joys of bicycling. Make the roads safe for all.
