By: A concerned lover of St. Kitts

I write this mini article to air my disgust and great disbelief about the way in which the basic Human Rights of a person to impart information through the media according to article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights appears to be blockaded by the law? I am not a national of this beautiful island but I have grown to love the country through marital ties.

Whilst I seek to gain daily information about the island, my reliance is heavily laid on the accuracy and picturesque messages displayed through the media of SKNVibes. This was only established after continuously searching for daily news on the island and after two hours, was certain the national media regarded as the ZIZ, or even the Labour Spokesman, the Democrat, or even the Observer had no  new pieces of information which daily relayed the genuine state of  affairs of the country. At a time the WINN FM website provided very useful information, but their speediness to release their news in great detail is unhurried. However, I was horrified and mortified when I read the SKNVibes headlines stating a more senior staff of the media was handcuffed for continuing to take pictures, a job which clearly fits his or any other member of staff whose role involves collecting such pieces of information to display to the public, especially during a time of more frequent and heightened rate of murders. This job obviously is one that has been performed since the establishment of SKNVibes as a media house.

With much outrage, this commentary is regarded as the only way I can highlight the importance of having a non-governmental unpoliticisied media body such as the SKNVibes and how its work must be protected by all the people of this wonderful country. Although ineffective measures to productively minimise the heightened levels of criminal activities occurring on this small country of St. Kitts appears to be in place, I am left speechless, when the  Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis Constitutional Order 1983 chp 2 art12- Freedom of Expression expressly states persons have the freedom to communicate ideas and information without interference...which is reasonably done in the interests of public safety and morality and does not impose restrictions on public officers to.. perform their functions. This media is clearly unrecognised by the upholders of the law, and by the impact they already have to deliver news to the outside world. It will be a true disgrace if the unharmful work of this body is affected in any way and by anyone, especially in a democratic country such as St. Kitts, when the actual scope of the role of this media house obviously appears to illustrate the daily activities on the island and the vulnerability of the people when they are impacted by any act in the country.

To the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, the outside world is already watching.
