Schools will now be grouped into zones. This transfers the responsibility of coordination from individual schools and shares it among zone members. There will be a total of five zones. The competition aspect of the event will also be eliminated.

Committee Chairman Dave Connor told SKNIS that the committee approved the change last Friday. “What we want to have happen this year is for the children to meet people from other schools, make new friends, interact with each other and get ready to play mas,” he said putting emphasis on the latter.

Connor explained that schools wishing to participate in the other aspects of carnival such as folklore are encouraged to do so.

The fantasy theme chosen for Children’s Carnival is ‘My Secret Garden.’ Costumes will represent related objects in a garden including flowers, insects and animals, natural elements and time of day.

Teacher and committee member Brenda Martin said she expects to hold a meeting with teachers from the different zones to discuss the changes and give them a chance to select which aspect of the theme they would like to portray.

She indicated that the zonal grouping would allow the process of registration and related activities to proceed efficiently thus ensuring that the necessary components are in place for the visits by the mas builders.

Ms. Martin disclosed that the students and faculty from the various schools are happy to see the junior carnival event return. She noted the disappointment that occurred last year and added that this carnival season brought a renewed sense of unity among the children as they anxiously await the upcoming celebrations.
