(Basseterre; St. Kitts): Workers of the Public Works' Road Department, Electricity Department, The Cable and Cable & Wireless are all involved in making sure that the construction on Fort Street goes smoothly.
The project is the resurfacing of the road, taking down the lampposts and all the cable lines from overhead and placing them in underground electrical cables.
Anthony Bergan, Foreman for the Road Department at Public Works said that the road was very bad.
"It needed resurfacing, it was very bad, Hurricanes use to cause the lampposts to fall but all of that would be avoided now," he said.
Bergan said that several heavy duty equipments were used during the construction including a 'Backhoe', a 'Roller and paver' and a 'Grader' before the asphalt or tar is used.
Supervisor of Maintenance at the Electricity Department Steven Pemberton said that he was unsure of when the project will be completed but said that their end will be completed by Friday.
"We're digging the trench and laying the cables and we're going energize the cables before the road is finished," he said.
He expressed satisfaction with the project.
"I feel very good about, we're beautifying the place and you won't see the regular dangling wire overhead which is a very good thing," he said.~~Adz:Right~~

"We will also put some decorative lamps at regular intervals on either side of the street along Fort Street. The private sector is involved," he said. "They have also indicated their intention to assist by putting paving stones along the sidewalks and the entire stretch of the road from Royal Bank up to Cayon Street junction'
The resurfacing is expected to be completed between during the week of Nov. 21 to 26, 2006.
