New tripe room at the abattoir in Prospect
    Charlestown
, Nevis (November 30, 2006) Nevis' abattoir which is managed and operated by the Department of Agriculture in Prospect is reporting phenomenal growth.  On Wednesday 29, there was a commissioning ceremony of a new tripe room allowing increased capabilities of the facility.

Manager of the abattoir, Mr. Gary Griffin said that the idea for the tripe room was borne out of the concerns raised by the Ministry of Health, with respect to how the department used to clean the tripe. He also said that now the room has been added, the abattoir was in a better position to market the produce.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. Robelto Hector said that he was delighted to see the completion of the expansion of the facility and noted that marketing was indeed a plus for the development of agriculture.

"I understand with this room being added," he said, "we will be able to market tripe to the public. A number of us know, years gone by the way we once as Nevisians utilised the tripe.  I think this is a step in the right direction in terms of expanding the market."

~~adz:right~~The Agriculture Minister, in extending appreciation to persons who had laboured before at the abattoir, thanked the former Minister of Agriculture for his work in assisting the expansion of the abattoir.  He also extended appreciation to the members of the department.

"I want to say to you, that this opportunity is one which would encourage employment here at the abattoir and an expansion of our agriculture commitment and work here on the island," said Minister Hector.

Addressing the ceremony, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Pearlivan Wilkin took the opportunity to congratulate the management and staff at the abattoir.  He noted that the extension of the facility was a clear indication that it was in a better position to respond to the needs of the general public.

Director of Agriculture, Kelvin Daley, Permanent Secretary, Pearlivan Wilkin, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Robelto Hector and Manager of Abattoir, Gary Griffin.

He pointed out that the abattoir had undergone several changes, citing, "They are now producing in addition to choice cuts, meat for hamburgers, patties and ground beef etc.  The government also must be congratulated for this intervention," said Mr. Wilkin.

The room will begin operations on Monday and the Director of Agriculture, Mr. Kelvin Daley expressed that the move was just another small step in the right direction.  "We would encourage more persons to go into livestock production, because they can now recover all of the value of their animals.  We would start selling the items in supermarkets or you can access them here at the abattoir," said Mr. Daley.
