Volunteers from Solid Waste Management Cooperation
{Basseterre, 1 January, 2007} UNESCO Small Island Voice in collaboration with Solid Waste Management Corporation sponsored a Clean-Up Carnival Troupe for the second year in a row.  The theme was Reduce and Reuse in 2007.

The Clean Up troupe followed the annual Carnival parade throughout part of its procession in Basseterre, on January 1, 2007,  cleaning and picking up trash strewn about throughout the day in order to encourage others to keep St. Kitts clean.  In keeping with their theme of Reduce and Reuse decorations for the troupe were made from discarded and recycled items such as water bottles, plastic soda bottles, cans, an old umbrella and an old food barrel.  The troupe was equipped with trash bags donated by a local supermarket and wheelbarrows were supplied by SWMC.

Small Island Voice would like to extend its thanks to many sponsors who provided water and drinks, plastic trash bags

Armstrong, Caribelle Batik, Rams, Courys, Westside Service Center, Best Buy, Kawajas, St. Kitts Bottling Company, Island Purified Water, O.D. Brisbane, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, the Parks and Beaches Unit, St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network, St. Christopher Heritage Society, the U.S. Peace Corps, Novelette Morton, and Derek Crawford.

Small Island Voice would also like to thank the many volunteers, several of whom played an active role in the planning stages.  Volunteers came from several groups throughout the island including: Small Island Voice, Solid Waste Management Corporation, St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network, the U.S. Peace Corps, and the St. Christopher Heritage Society.  Several concerned citizens joined the troupe along the route.  Small Island Voice hopes to extend the size of the troupe next year by this same means or by other volunteers groups.
