ST. KITTS - NEVIS NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO
~~adz:Left~~The St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO is in the process of organizing the Celebration and Commemoration, the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in the British West Indies.

These activities will fall within the frame -work of a project proposal that was submitted under the UNESCO Participation Programme, for the 2006-2007 Biennium, which was subsequently approved by UNESCO. The National Commission is therefore preparing to execute this project, and is in the process of establishing a Committee to implement the activities with the appropriate persons and expertise.  The project will be officially launched in February 2007, while the activities will be executed between the months of February and August of 2007, in order to celebrate in full, this very important mile- stone in our peoples history.

The main activities of this project include but are not limited to:

    -          An International lecture on the topic of the Slave Trade by acclaimed Regional, North American, and African Scholars on the said topic in the month of May.
    -          A Grand Freedom Concert at Independence Square in the month of August.
    -          Visits to schools by officials to speak on the topic of the Slave Trade between the months of May and July.
    -          Panel discussions and debates on the topic of the Slave Trade and its impact on the British West Indies and our way of life as a people. This is scheduled to take place between the months of March and August.

The Objectives of this project are as follows:

ยท         To educate the public, especially the youths, and others, about the Slave Trade and its impact on their lives.

    • To create in the youth population particularly, a sense of pride in their achievement since 1807.

    • To create a debate among our people on these pertinent issues about the Slave Trade.

    • To bring citizens to an understanding of the Slave Trade, such as would lead them to resolve that it never occur again.

    • To give young people a better understanding about themselves.

We would like to therefore invite the General Public to get involved and be apart of this significant milestone in our history, as the National Commission seeks to stimulate interest and raise the profile of the Two Hundredth Anniversary Celebration and Commemoration of the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
