    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 22, 2007) -- Mrs. Celian Irene Madden Powell of Zion Village celebrated her seniority on Friday January19, 2007 when she turned 95. Surrounded by close family and friends at her home in Zion, she gave thanks to her creator for her long life.

     

    Praise God for me people and dem. Father I give them thanks who come today come look for Miss Powell. Thank ah you werry [very] much. May God bless each and ebry [every] one. I got to pray for dem. Today Friday look where dey [they] deh [are] in a Zion come look for Madden, she said in joyful spirits.
     
    Minister with responsibility of Social Transformation (Senior Citizens Division) the Hon. Hensley Daniel while he expressed congratulations to the birthday girl noted that the Nevis Island Administration had had a busy engagement with the elderly on Nevis.
     
    He said the engagement was indicative of his Administrations commitment to the welfare of senior citizens and the need to ensure that they lived their last years in peace and tranquillity and were well cared for.
     
    So rest assured that the government of the Nevis Island Administration will do everything possible to continue to care for and ensure that the senior citizens live their last years full of grace, he said.
     
    Hon. Carlisle Powell Junior Minister in the Nevis Island Administration who is a grandson of Mrs Powell and was on hand for the celebration said, she had been an amputee since 1978 and had accepted her fate and continued to live with a glad heart. She also enjoyed a sharp memory and a good sense of humour.
     
    During a brief ceremony, Mr Powell who spoke on behalf of the other grandchildren who resided overseas (Cathleen, Mary, Merve, Wingrove, Beverly, Glenda and Everett) and Trevor who lived and cared for her with the assistance of his wife Josette wished their grandmother a happy birthday

    Mrs. Celian Irene Madden Powell cradles her bouquet of flowers while her daughter Mrs Idris Brown looks on.

    Mrs. Powells only surviving child Mrs. Idris Browne who was visibly emotional, in a moving tribute to her mom thanked God for her longevity
     
    I thank her very much and I hope she lives to be a 100. I thank God for you, you have lived all these years and you take all your difficulties praise God. I reach back here to give you all the thanks and all the blessings& We give God thanks for your life. You have lived all these years, so I trust and hope that when your time on earth is finished you can say thank everybody, she said.
     
    Other tributes came from grandson Trevor, ~~adz:Left~~great grand son Mr. Allan Powell, Mrs Patsy Hanley while she presented a birthday cake on behalf of the Premier, Cabinet and the members of the Nevis Reformation Party and Mrs Vaughn on behalf of the Ministry of Social Transformation. Mr Llewellyn Newton lay preacher in the Gingerland Methodist Church administered the sacrament to Mrs. Powell and later led a toast on behalf of the people of Zion, New river and Harris in her honour.
