Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 23rd, 2007 - It is time to promote the audiovisuals that have been created by Caribbean people and that tell of the region's cultural identity.  The 'Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase' is seeking to do just this.~~adz:Left~~

The Caribbean is filled with many hidden treasures. One such is our film and television industry. For years, Caribbean filmmakers have been working tirelessly, doing extremely well within and outside the region. Sadly, some of these undertakings have gone unnoticed, not only internationally but even within the Caribbean. Therefore, there's a need to build awareness and to have dialogue on Caribbean audiovisuals and cinema.

During the Cuban Cinema Festival held in Kingston in 2005, Jamaican and Cuban culture officials agreed to create a Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase that will involve the participation of 22 Dutch, English, French and Spanish speaking territories.  Twenty-eight Films(28) from these countries have been selected to form the Showcase.  All of which will be shown in each participating island.  Their inaugural journey will take them to St. Kitts-Nevis, where all within, will be the first in the region to privy the films, from February 22nd - 26th, 2007. ~~adz:Right~~

The St. Kitts-Nevis Coordination Committee is chaired by Marlene Phillips Lee, who says of the event, "t's a fantastic opportunity for us to see the beautiful landscape of our Caribbean neighbours and learn, through the eyes of Caribbean Directors, about issues of importance to Caribbean people that have found expression through the medium of film. I encourage everyone to show your support for the Caribbean Film Industry by joining us at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank to experience an assortment of spectacular films from different genres. Tickets will be available at the Department of Culture - Port Zante from the 12th of February 2007".

The Showcase organizers are: the Cuban Institute of Cinema Art and Industry (ICAIC) in coordination with the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean - based in Havana, the UNESCO Offices in Kingston Jamaica and Port-au-Prince Haiti, with the support of CARICOM, cultural institutions and governments in several Caribbean Nations, the Casa de las Americas Caribbean Studies Centre and the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema along with other agencies.
