    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 25TH 2007 St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has pledged to continue to assist the people of the twin-island Federation and "make life better for those who are more unfortunate than myself and to do that in the very short life that I am allowed here on earth."

     

    "I believe it is my duty to continue to ensure that people live wholesome lives. That is why I bring a very strong appeal and ask for your support in my own global mission in the fight against poverty, in the fight against chronic diseases  hypertension, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases which hare plaguing our people, especially the black population; and also the scourge of society today, as a communicable disease, HGIV/AIDS," said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader after he accepted the Global Award from CNN's White House Correspondent, Suzanne Malveaux and Actress and First Lady of the Turks and Caicos Islands, LisaRaye McCoy-Misick at the 2007 Trumpet Awards ceremony at the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.

     

    "In particular, it is a stigma, it is the discrimination and its association with HIV/AIDS that really causes the devastation. As people of power, as people of wealth, people who are captains of commerce, industry and business in this hall tonight, I ask you to dedicate some of your own time and your resources and join us in ensuring that we can rid this world of poverty and of the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS," Prime Minister Douglas told the cream of the Afro-American achievers. Dr. Douglas acceptance preceded a short video on his life.

     

    Dr. Douglas said that it is the environment that has been created by the People and the Government of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis that has allowed him to be in Las Vegas to accept the award.

     

    "I therefore dedicate it, not only to my children, but to all of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis so that they will continue to give me that mandate and the joy that my own life mission, making someones life better during my own lifetime as I serve humanity," said Prime Minister Douglas to a long standing ovation from the hundreds present.

    Prime Minister Douglas was supported at the Awards by his daughter, Dr. Andrea Douglas, son, Denzil Douglas Jr.; Ms. Alex Woodley; Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris; Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Sen. the Hon.

     

    Richard Skerritt, Press Secretary, Mr. Erasmus Williams and close friends, Hon. Asot Michael of Antigua; Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Parris of Barbados and Mr and Mrs. Sunnil Parray of Canada.

     

    The host of the award ceremony was TV Gospel Producer, Dr. Bobby Jones. Presenters included Gospel Artist, Yolanda Adams; Actor Jams Avery; Entertainer, Gladys Knight; Usher Raymond; Ambassador Andrew Young; Award Winning Song Stylist, Nancy Wilson and President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Rev. Jesse Jackson. Other performers included Comedian/Actor, Tommy Davidson; Clint Eastwood and Monterey Jazz Festival Alumni, Trumpeter, Melvin Miller, Comedian George Wallace and Zumanity featuring a special performance by cast members.

    The Trumpet Awards is one of the United States most respected award shows. Saluting the achievements of African-Americans, and those who have shown consistent support toward the enhancement of African-American achievement, the Trumpet Awards pay homage to honorees in many diverse fields including law, politics, medicine, business, sports and entertainment.

Brinker  Presidents Award; Orok Duke - Young STAR; Clint Eastwood - Social Justice; Hill Harper - The Usher Raymond Altruism Award; J. Terrence Lanni - Chairman's Award .

     

    Will Harper was the producer of the 2007 Trumpet Awards, giving creative direction, proficiency and flair to the awards ceremony.

     

    Harper, no stranger to the Hollywood scene, is an award-winning director/producer, directing shows such as "Behind the Music" with Lenny Kravitz, "Unleashed" with Jamie Foxx, and Oprahs day time show.

     

    He has created a plethora of commercials, music videos, documentaries and broadcast television entertainment for CBS, NBC, TBS, Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal, and Harpo.

     





    Over the years, the Trumpet Awards have paid tribute to Muhammad Ali, Destinys Child, Spike Lee, Dr. "J" Julius Erving, Quincy Jones, Coretta Scott-King, Andrew Young, Rosa Parks, Nancy Wilson, Governor Charles Turnbull, Harry Belafonte, Randall Robinson, Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr; Bernard Shaw, Susan Taylor, Vernon Jordan, Rev and Mrs. Jesse Jackson; Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Reverend C.T. Vivian, and Lorenzo Creighton, President & COO of New York-New York Hotel and Casino and the first African-American to head a property on the Las Vegas Strip.

     

    Tapes of the ceremony are made available to schools throughout the country to provide motivation and role-models to heighten the goals of young people in many urban communities.

     

    "The Trumpet Awards is not just an evening of glamour and glitz, .~~adz:Right~~even though we look forward to the atmosphere that adds to the occasion," said Ms. Clayton, Founder, Creator and Executive Producer of The Trumpet Awards. "The Trumpet Awards sends a message across America and abroad that African Americans are doing things second to none and that young Black students have much to emulate and even more to be proud of," Ms . Clayton continued.

     

    The 2007 Trumpet Awards will be aired, for the third year, on TV One. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a major producer of news and entertainment product around the world and the leading provider of programming for the basic cable industry, is the presenting sponsor of the 2007 Trumpet Awards. The MGM MIRAGE is the Host Sponsor.

     

    TV One, which was launched three years ago, is owned by Radio One and Comcast and is available in about 35 million homes.

     

    The network collaborates on the Trumpet Awards with the Atlanta-based Trumpet Foundation, which is led by creator Xernona Clayton.

     

    Joyce Epps, who works at the Trumpet Foundation, said the awards ceremony will be back in Atlanta in 2008.
