    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
No, he wasn't a stand-up comedian, he was a community man whose amusing personality stood out among the people of Sandy Point.  With his famous philosophy on life of living everyday like it was his 'birthday', St. Clair 'Funny Man' Lawrence took his last breath last evening when there was a fire inside his home.

Last evening, Thursday, Feb. 15, neighbors and other residents of Sandy Point responded to the fire after hearing noises from his home and were able to save it from being burnt to ashes.

However, they were unable to save Lawrence's life as he apparently died from inhaling the smoke.

Funny Man was between the ages of 80-85 and lived with his nephew Everson Lawrence a.k.a. Sky Man.

The fire which burnt the bed of Sky Man occurred sometime around 10 p.m.~~adz:Right~~

Neighbors responded with water hoses and buckets in hopes of extinguishing the flames.

The Fire and Rescue Services, a few police officers and EMS arrived on the scene shortly, when the fire was almost out, or out altogether.

Up to press time the cause of the fire or death had not been confirmed.

Funny Man was pronounced dead by Dr. 'Nargen' Wilson of the Pogson Hospital at 11 p.m.

Kurt 'Channy' Simmonds of Sandy Point who lives a few houses away from the deceased also assisted in putting out the fire.

The bed that was burnt belonging to Sky Man, Funny Man's nephew.
"I got home at around 9:45 p.m. and was at home relaxing when I heard some noise from nearby," he said.  "I came out to see what was happening only to realize that my neighbor house is on fire; there were a few neighbors who had already begun putting out the flames so I chipped in to lend a hand."

Simmonds said that after the flames subsided he went into the home of Funny Man who he knew could not move around very well.

"So I went to look for him, only to find him lying on his bed, seemingly unharmed and asleep, but he was not moving," he said.  "I tried to wake him but soon realized that he was dead.  This made me very sad because this is a man who I knew all of my life while growing up.  There were many times when he gave me food when I was hungry.  He will be greatly missed."
