Director of Youth Geoffrey Hanley said the Youth Department will be intensifying training.
Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 08, 2007):
The Department of Youth is making a concerted effort to strengthen existing training programmes and introduce new initiatives in order to positively influence the youth population.

In an interview with SKNIS, Director of Youth Geoffrey Hanley revealed that training will be centered on personal development, entrepreneurship, single father parenting and capacity building for youth groups.

The areas outlined were chosen based on feedback from young people, employers and the general public. We recognize that there are concerns in regards to the attitude of some young people and the general lack of responsibility exhibited at the workplace and during team oriented activities. We intend to address these areas and mould more productive citizens, Hanley explained.

The personal development aspect will target school leavers and other persons to assist the transition from student or unemployed to an employed and productive worker. Entrepreneurship will also target this same grouping. Participants will explore the basic necessities of developing and implementing plans to start a business and ways to ensure its continuity. ~~adz:Right~~

Interactive sessions for single fathers have already begun. Director Hanley, who holds a Degree in Psychology and Social Work as well as a Masters in Education, facilitated a half day session in Old Road for 20 men, last month.

Hanley said the session was extremely useful and plans are being made to expand the programme. In the meantime, he has been having one on one discussions with participants who ask for additional advice.

Increased debating activities for young people exclusive of Youth Parliament, are also planned to get their opinions on social issues affecting them.
