Press Release
The St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO along with other government ministries is continuing to organize the activities in Commemoration of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in the British West Indies.

These activities fall within the frame -work of a project proposal that was submitted under the UNESCO Participation Programme, for the 2006-2007 Biennium, which was subsequently approved by UNESCO.

The National Commission is therefore preparing to conduct a church service in honor of those who lost their lives during the period of the slave trade.  The church service will be held on Sunday 25th March 2007, from 10.00 am to 12.05 pm, at the Zion Moravian Church, Victoria Road, Basseterre, St. Kitts.

It is also important to note that the 25th of March was designated by the United Nations as the international day for the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The resolution also encourages countries to undertake activities at the local and national levels to celebrate the event.~~adz:Right~~

The said event should ideally, embrace and involve as wide a cross - section of the public as possible, and the local Committee charged with the task of organizing appropriate celebratory activities, including the Church Service, has sought to do full justice to that charge.

The unique service at Zion on Sunday 25th will feature presentations by youths, as well as senior members of Society.  It will showcase African - derived and African influenced songs, drumming, dances, reading and messages.

A highlight of the service will be the symbolic   re-enactment of the reading of the actual Abolition Act that put an end to the Slave Trade in our region in March, 1807.

The general public is therefore in for a grand treat, a service full of meaning reflection and splendor, and all are invited to be apart of this truly historic moment in time.
