In the wake of the Nevis Agriculture Department's Open Day we at Sknvibes.com hit the streets to ask you:

How do you feel the Agriculture Industry can impact the economy?

    Fellar Jones
"I think it is a very good thing regardless of how you look at it.  I think that if these people in government should catch hold of these vagabonds and hooligans and put their hands in the ground so that they can plant food.  And let them do something instead of watching people and robbing them of what they have.  If you are walking along the road someone would come along and beg you what you have.  You just have to keep your head up.  Agriculture is a lasting thing; I bought a fork in 1973 and that fork was well kept and in fact it is still there!  No one puts their hands on that fork but me and that fork cost me $14.95 back then.  Now you can't get a fork for that kind of money."
    Fellar Jones

"I think Agriculture can affect our economy when persons go into the industry and try to supply our own local grown food which is
    Joseph Woolward
much healthier because when we grow our own we know for a fact what we have.  We have soil which is capable of growing really good produce and I think we need to go back to Agriculture.  The government should make available for persons who are involved in Agriculture an opportunity to obtain some more lands.  Our younger folks do not seem to have the inclination for the soil whereas our fore-parents did a good job in working the soil and they were in much better health in those days.  Agriculture is a good thing and we need to go back to it."
    Joseph Woolward

    Shennel Pemberton
"I do not think that Agriculture is dead per se but I do think that there are aspects of it that need reviving.  There are also parts of it that need to be looked at and modified for it to be a booming industry in Nevis.  We are focusing on Tourism a lot but we need to go back to what we had originally which was Agriculture."
    Shennel Pemberton

"I think that Agriculture is a good industry because you can plant food for yourself and you can feed yourself.  We need to go back to
    Wingrove Powell
the old time farming and planting and so because we are eating too many chemicals and it is making people unhealthy.  If we eat more home-grown food it will be much more inexpensive and the economy would be better."
    Wingrove Powell

    Eric Evelyn
"Over the years Agriculture has been an integral part of the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis and I think that even though Agriculture is not at the stage that we would want it to be at this point in time it is still making a meaningful contribution towards our economy.  We know that our main industry is Tourism and what we are trying to push in the Agriculture Department is linkage between the Agriculture Department and the Tourism sector.  When the tourists come we want them to get a local experience.  The products that you find here are organically produced in that not a lot of chemicals are used.  In addition there are some fruits that are available in the temperate countries where tourists are coming from so what we want is that when they come they can get a taste of what we have to offer."
