    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 26TH 2007 -
Another call from St. Kitts and Nevis' Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for the corporate community in the Caribbean to develop and take advantage of the CARICOM Single Market.

He told guests at the launching of CLICO International General Insurance Limited and the official opening of a building that would house the Headquarters of the CLICO Group operations in St. Kitts and Nevis that companies would need to plan and judge for themselves the best time and conditions under which expansion will occur.

Dr. Douglas said it was important that companies engage themselves in the philosophy of effective regionalism, and that companies and corporations explore on a continuing basis the emerging economic environment of the Caribbean region.

"Certainly, it is critical that the focus of regional companies takes into account the global competitiveness of the region, and is fully and actively engaged in the growth and development of the people of the Caribbean Community," said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that "not too long from now, it is the expectation that the proposed OECS Treaty for Economic Union will become available for public consideration and input."

"This proposal is aimed at further strengthening the Treaty of Basseterre, thus providing the framework to take OECS member states to the next logical level of functional corporation, and is intended to provide a fundamental nexus to the evolving CSME," said Dr.

Douglas, who added that over the next five to ten years, the region enters a period that is at once challenging and exciting.

"It is up to all of us to commit ourselves to the ideal of being productive, creative and efficient, of being remarkable for our Caribbean friendliness and professionalism," said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader, who admitted that the region has a great deal of work to do to position itself as a vibrant economic area noted for high standards, exceptional quality, excellence in service, high levels of reliability, as well as strength in its own democratic systems of governance, including enhances policies and practices on good governance and transparency.

"I wish also to take this occasion to call upon companies in the Federation to play their part in creating greater awareness and to assist in changing behaviour with regards to HIV/AIDS. Policies must reflect zero tolerance on stigma and discrimination in the workplace. It is a big mistake to become complacent, and it is essential that we sustain our fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS.

At the same time, it is important that companies like CLICO, continue to promote health lifestyles among their employees," said Prime Minister Douglas, who is also the CARICOM Spokesperson on HIV/AIDS and other health issues.

Dr. Douglas emphasised that the process of development of St. Kitts and Nevis must by necessity and good sense involve a variety of interests and it was important that local, regional and foreign investment capital come into play in the critical need to continue the development path of the twin-island Federation.~~adz:Right~~

"Just as important is the need for trained and educated human resources, higher levels of proficiency and competence not only in the Public, but also in the Private Sector. Our people must remain at the heart of such development. Let us endeavour as a people to work together to achieve individual and national aspirations," urged Prime Minister Douglas.
