    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
At a post-Cabinet Press Briefing held yesterday Monday, April, 16, Minister of State with responsibility for  Finance, Sustainable Development, Information and Technology, Nigel Carty assured that Fort Street will be re-opened later this week.

According to the Minister, "having received input from a wide cross section of the community in relation to whether Fort Street should be permanently closed, Cabinet, after very extensive discussions, decided that Fort Street should be re-opened to vehicular traffic."

However, there will be no parking on the street the Minister went on to say.

A few weeks ago the debate of whether the most popular street in St. Kitts should remain closed to vehicular traffic, was vibrant within the media, and several surveys were done.

There was even a petition surfacing and allegedly signed by over 300 people who wished for the street to remain closed.

A poll which is currently ongoing on SKNVibes.com's homepage also revealed that 72% of the voters preferred the street to be open.

On radio programs such as WINN FM's "Voices", callers would complain about the street not being open and went on to say that there isn't a special landmark on the street or tourist spot, therefore there was no need for the closure.

The street was closed during the hosting of the ICC World Cup Cricket where St. Kitts hosted a few games and joined in, in welcoming the world.

The Minister addressing cabinet went on to say that the relevant government departments will work to ensure that the street returns to normal operation and thanked all those who participated in the discussions and would like to thank the public for its understanding on the matter.
