BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, APRIL 17TH 2007
    - Fort Street in the heart of downtown, Basseterre, will reopen on Wednesday, but to vehicular traffic only.

This is the decision of the Cabinet following extensive discussion and input from a wide cross section of the community in relation to whether Fort Street should be permanently closed.

"Cabinet, after very extensive discussions, decided that Fort Street should be re-opened to vehicular traffic, but that there should be no parking on that street," Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty announced Monday night following the weekly meeting of the Cabinet. Mr. Carty said that the relevant government departments will work to ensure that the street returns to normal operation by later this week.

"The government would like to thank all those who participated in the discussions and would like to thank the public for its understanding on this matter," said Minister Carty. A Press Release issued Tuesday afternoon from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force said the area of Fort Street, which lies north of the Berkley Memorial (Circus Clock) will be reopened to vehicular traffic from Wednesday 18th April. ~~adz:Right~~

"Vehicular traffic will be permitted to remain stationary only for such a period as is necessary to load or off-load goods or allow passengers to embark or disembark fro the vehicles," said the police statement. The taxi-stand will remain as it has been. Fort Street was turned into a pedestrian mall during the matches of Cricket World Cup 2007.
