    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, APRIL 25TH 2007 -
    St. Kitts and Nevis will support Italy, India and Qatar for three of the four seats on the United Nations Human Rights Council next month.

     

    The decision was made by the St. Kitts and Nevis Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

     

    "In anticipation of the United Nations 62nd General Assembly in May 2007, at which elections will be held for seats on the Human Rights Council, Cabinet discussed the candidates for the four seats and approved the support of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis for Italy, India and Qatar," Minister of State for Information, Hon.

     

    Nigel Carty told a Post Cabinet briefing following Monday's meeting.

     

    The election of fourteen members of the Human Rights Council will be held on 17 May 2007.

     

    According to the United nations Human Rights Website, the Council shall consist of forty-seven Member States, which shall be elected directly and individually by secret ballot by the majority of the members of the General Assembly; the membership shall be based on equitable geographical distribution, and seats shall be distributed as follows among regional groups: Group of African States, thirteen; Group of Asian States, thirteen; Group of Eastern European States, six; Group of Latin American and Caribbean States, eight; and Group of Western European and other States, seven; the members of the Council shall serve for a period of three years and shall not be eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms.
