    Muscovado's Album Cover
    (Charlestown, Nevis)
--- Godfrey Griffith affectionately known in the music industry as 'Muscovado' speaks out on the issue of the "deadbeat dad" in his latest album "The Power of the Spoken Word".

Griffith who was born and raised in Nevis currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.  The album "The Power of the Spoken Word" initially uses dialogue in its introductory track to expand on the factors which catalyze absenteeism amongst fathers.

The dialogue said: "Daddy where are you?  I miss you.  I don't know what came over me but this deadly cycle just driving me crazy, but then again I remember my father before me and his father before him and his father before him laid the ground work for me so it comes easy for me it just comes naturally.  It is a vicious deadly cycle that has got me going crazy.

"I got word that the "popo" was looking for me to which I replied it was a virtual impossibility. So I went to enquire of "popo" and asked him what he required of me when he slapped the cuffs on me so I asked him "What did I do?"  and he said "Sir it is not what you did but what you didn't do," said Griffith.

He continued, "Then I asked him what he meant by that because I didn't remember doing "didly squat".  He said just a little while ago you had a baby boy with a lady and you left them without fulfilling your obligation to them so we classified you as a deadbeat dad.  Being a father of four, myself, and on your part I think this is very, very, very sad."

At this point the character in the dialogue defends his point of view by justifying his upbringing.

"In my defense I tried to tell him that my father before me did the exact thing to my mother and me, so I was just walking in his footsteps.  I am just caught up in a vicious deadly cycle.  If my son after me does the same thing surely this can be devastating. After all this time it took this time it took catastrophe for me to face the error in my ways.

"Enough for me to say 'Mother of my child I apologize.  Son I am sorry to be blinded by ignorance and stupidity'.  I did the crime so I made up in my mind to do the time in order to end the cycle to uplift family life.  I don't know what came over me but the vicious cycle was driving me crazy.  I am breaking this cycle I have to do something, someway somehow and I am letting you know that that time is now.  Daddy is coming home.  Daddy is home.  Daddy is home to stay," said the songwriter. ~~adz:Right~~
In an interview with SKNVibes.com Griffith explained that he was motivated by experiences in his life which he wanted to pass on to others facing the same situations.  While the album does have serious tones, it also touches on lighter issues.

Griffith said the track "Ribs" was a recap of an experience which he had in St. Croix where he found out a restaurant was selling dog ribs.
"The album is really based on experiences that I would have had in the Caribbean.  Some focus on heavy issues while others touch on humorous experiences which I would have had.  I remember that I went to St. Croix and always had ribs at this particular place - they were the best.  However, when push came to shove I found out that they were using dog ribs to make the food and let's just say that I didn't go back to that restaurant again.

"In all I just hope that the album would bring back memories for persons who are currently living abroad so that we can remember our culture.  Life is so different now compared to when I was a young fellar.  However, with this album I just wanted to take us back to an era past so that we could appreciate our culture," he said.
